Westhaven Park, IIb & IIc
Client/Owner: CHA/Michaels Develpment

General Contractor: Linn Mathes Inc./Walsh Construction

The redevelopment of The Henry Horner Homes, known as Westhaven Park, is a mixed-income community comprised of 3 and 4 story buildings that are a variety of walk-ups, townhouses, and mid rises.  The new community blends seamlessly into the West Town neighborhood of Chicago, while making new strides to address energy sustainability, affordability and accessibility.

McKay Landscape Architects sought to strengthen this community through thoughtful design, providing numerous common areas, sitting spaces for residents to share and interact, to feel part of a whole.  The desired effect was a truly unified housing complex, not individual houses and apartments but one large, interconnected community space; a web of pathways, gardens, and beautiful, affordable dwellings.  Sustainability was addressed by using permeable paving, drought resistant plants, rain gardens, rain barrels, and select areas of green roofs.
